Education/Experience Requirements: Successful completion of a 4-year lineman or substation apprenticeship program; or lineman journeyman certificate from an accredited trade school; or 48 months of validated line construction work experience with a minimum score of 80% on the district or utility Lineman Journeyman exam. 

Position Summary: High Voltage Switchperson safely operates and switches transformers to de-energize or energize wind turbines following written switching orders.  This includes testing for voltages and applying LOTO.

Essential Job Functions

  • Must follow all safety regulations (OSHA, NFPA 70E and Blattner Energy safety requirements) while performing duties.
  • Operates and switches transformers to de- energize or energize wind turbines; includes testing for voltages and applying LOTO.
  • Uses and operates voltage testing equipment and has an understanding of the readings.
  • Handles, operates and cares for various types of switching sticks.
  • Installs grounding clusters utilizing various styles of connections; and inspects grounds.
  • Installs or may assist in the installation of cable construction by testing and tracing circuits in power systems.
  • Instructs personnel in the proper and safe way to perform their duties; instructs and trains new personnel on the use of tools and equipment; provides safety training instructions and is responsible for the general safety of personnel.
  • Administers first aid to injured persons when necessary; caution and use of safety devices such as rubber protective equipment and hot-line tools; conforms to all safety rules and policies as established by the Company.
  • Acts as Lead/Foreman when assigned/delegated.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read, understand and follow written switching orders and procedures.
  • Knowledge and proficient ability to inspect and use appropriate PPE including voltage rated rubber gloves, switching sticks including “shotguns” and arc rated clothing.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and knowledge of OSHA’s safe energized working clearances.
  • Ability to work energized distribution and transmission voltages.
  • Knowledge of and proficient ability to review and or Implement Lock out / Tag out (LOTO) program.
  • Possess a basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • A valid driver's license issued by Department of Motor Vehicles with an acceptable driving record is required. 
  • Rubber Gloves and/or Hot Sticks Certification required.
  • NFPA 70e certification preferred
  • Forklift experience preferred.
  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Must be able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
  • Capable of working at heights and/or confined spaces.
  • Follows instructions, responds to management direction; Takes responsibility for own actions; Commits to long hours of work when necessary to reach goals.
  • Self-motivated, and team & customer oriented

This position requires frequent standing, walking, lifting/carrying (up to 50 pounds frequently, up to 100 pounds occasionally) pushing, reaching, handling, use of fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting, and climbing. Occasional balancing and rarely requires sitting; continuous balancing required climbing poles, towers, ladders and in other aspects of the job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places and extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
