Education Requirements: High school equivalency and successful completion of a 4-year lineman apprenticeship program or lineman journeyman certificate from an accredited trade school or 48 months of validated line construction work experience and a minimum score of 80% on the district or utility Lineman Journeyman exam.  A valid Class "A" driver's license issued by Department of Motor Vehicles is required.  Rubber Gloves and/or Hot Sticks Certification required.

Experience:  4 years of experience required.


Position Summary: Journeymen linemen build and maintain electrical power systems. They do all the work from the point of generation (power plants) all the way to the customer's meter. The lines may be on overhead structures or in underground vaults or trenches. They may be in rural and metropolitan areas.


Essential Job Functions

  • Follow OSHA and customer safety requirements.
  • Performs construction duties by erecting and setting poles and towers; attaching necessary crossarms, davit arms, transformers, circuit breakers, all types of switch gear, lightning arrestors, anchors, guys; stringing, sagging, splicing, clipping-in,  insulating, attaching, and connecting conductors, OPGW, static wires, fiber optics; installation of underground systems including cables, vaults, and grounds; installation of insulators, elbows, lightning arrestors, T-bodies, transformers, junction boxes and sockets, switch boxes, pull boxes, and similar equipment.
  • Installs or may assist in cable construction by testing and tracing circuits in power systems; makes various types of connections between electrical conductors; insulates conductors properly for the voltage conditions under which they are to operate; seals cable joints within a waterproof housing; makes electrical connections between conductors and various types of equipment such as transformers, potheads, and terminal boxes; as required, may weatherproof or fireproof cables.
  • Tree trimming and use of tools.
  • Supervise groundman and apprentices as necessary. Instructs personnel in the proper and safe way to perform their duties and instructs and trains new personnel in the use of tools and equipment; provides safety training instructions and is responsible for the general safety of personnel and in the administering of first aid to injured persons when necessary; caution and use of safety devices such as rubber protective equipment and hot-line tools; conforms with all safety rules and policies as established by the Company.
  • Produce highly productive cycle times for labor, equipment and materials, and identify and evaluate job cost reduction strategies. Identify and monitor critical items that reduce productivity or complicate scheduling. Communicate to Foreman or Trade Superintendent any ideas or suggestions to improve processes and productivity.
  • Install underground distribution and transmission systems and assemble and erect substations if applicable. 
  • Acts as Lead/Foreman when assigned/delegated.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and knowledge of OSHA’s safe energized working clearances.
  • Ability to work energized distribution and transmission voltages.
  • Possess a basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
  • A good understanding and working knowledge of substations. 
  • Ability to connect conductors and other wires within substations.
  • Ability to obtain a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s license. 
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Forklift experience preferred.
  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Must be able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
  • Capable of working at heights and/or confined spaces.
  • Follows instructions, responds to management direction; Takes responsibility for own actions; Commits to long hours of work when necessary to reach goals.

  • Must be able to follow Company safety rules and all other Company policies.

This position requires frequent standing, walking, lifting/carrying (up to 50 pounds frequently, up to 100 pounds occasionally) pushing, reaching, handling, use of fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting, and climbing.  Occasional balancing and rarely requires sitting; continuous balancing required climbing poles, towers, ladders and in other aspects of the job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places and extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
