Education Requirements: High school equivalency.

Experience: Line Constriction experience is preferred but at a minimum candidate should have a knowledge of basic hand tools and knowledge of equipment operation.  

Position Summary: Successful candidate will perform all duties of the Groundman classification, which involves various duties supporting electric overhead and underground construction activities. A Groundmen/Labor is going to be a cross between a structure labor, rigger and heavy industrial construction labor.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized underground work.
  2. Sets pad mount transformers.
  3. Maintains company vehicles, equipment and tools in good working order.
  4. Works in underground trenches and manholes.
  5. Understands and uses basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying.
  6. Able to identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit and familiar with induced voltage.
  7. Assists with the installation and hook up of a single phase transformer.
  8. Capable of performing basic bucket rescue/escape.
  9. Understands the basic concepts of equipment set up and grounding.
  10. Understands minimum approach distance, and excavation and shoring requirements.
  11. Capable of checking voltage on transformers; installing and removing a service; and properly inspecting rubber goods and PPE.
  12. Understands how and when to use Kellum grips.
  13. Operates a buck truck, aerial devices, and man baskets.
  14. Performs additional assignments per supervisor’s direction.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to learn the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and knowledge of OSHA’s safe energized working clearances.
  • Ability to obtain a Class “A or B” Commercial Driver’s license.  
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Forklift experience preferred.
  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Must be able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
  • Capable of working at heights and/or confined spaces.
  • Possess a basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
  • Self-motivated, and team & customer oriented
  • Must be able to follow Company safety rules and all other Company policies.

This position requires frequent standing, walking, lifting/carrying (up to 50 pounds frequently, up to 100 pounds occasionally) pushing, reaching, handling, use of fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting, and climbing. Occasional balancing and rarely requires sitting; continuous balancing required climbing poles, towers, ladders and in other aspects of the job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places and extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
