Qualifications:  Minimum of 5 years’ total experience, and at least one year in each of the following areas preferred: contracts, employment, and construction law. 

Education Requirements: A Juris Doctorate and admitted to the Minnesota Bar.

Position Summary: Serve as a staff legal counsel for the company to advise co-workers on legal and related matters regarding risk, laws and regulations that may affect activities of the business with regular supervision from the General Counsel. The qualified candidate that succeeds in attaining this position may be eligible to perform the work of this job, in part, according to the terms of Blattner’s Telecommuting and Remote Work Policy and Guidelines.

Top Essential Job Functions

  1. Litigation Management.  Manage and facilitate litigation matters as assigned, such as employment and labor law disputes, subcontractor claims and third party claims, collaborating with outside counsel retained by General Counsel.  Investigate the claim and surrounding circumstances, supervise the litigation process, analyze the corporate risk, facilitate dispute resolution negotiations, and supervise preparation of documentation of the final resolution.
  2. Regulatory Compliance.  Assists General Counsel with ensuring that company practices, policies and procedures comply with corporate regulatory requirements. For matters assigned, prepare corporate policies and procedures by analyzing operations and administration to determine needs for changes or development of corporate policies and procedures.
  3. Labor Relations.  Assist General Counsel with labor relations and strategy.  Handles labor negotiations for assigned matters.
  4. Employment Matters.  Advise company regarding select employment dispute and discrimination matters, working directly with the Human Resources Department. Assist in preparation of corporate policies and procedures by analyzing operations and administration to determine needs for changes or development of corporate policies and procedures.
  5. Contracts.  Review, negotiate and edit customer contracts involving assigned customers in collaboration with operations leaders, and the General Counsel, if necessary; advise operations personnel on contractual risks and negotiation strategies related to such contracts; act as agent of company transactions related to such projects; review subcontract edits proposed by subcontractors and advise department staff and operational leaders on prudent (or prescribed) contract language and negotiation strategy; advise and train operations personnel on contract and subcontract administration and enforcement; prepares legal and corporate documents by drafting contracts and agreements on behalf of the corporation, communicating with General Counsel as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience practicing law with general contract principles and advising business clients preferred.
  • Contract law and commercial contract experience required.
  • Knowledge of construction and construction law preferred.
  • Good communication skills (written, verbal and presentation).
  • Employment law, corporate law, benefits law experience preferred.
