Education Requirements: Formal paralegal training from an accredited program, preferably a four-year degree program.

 

Experience: Five years’ experience working as a litigation paralegal in a law firm or in-house legal department. Experience with civil litigation assistance and e-discovery.

 

Position Summary: Provides support to in-house attorneys on litigation, labor, and project related matters. Coordinates discovery, including assists assigned in-house attorney with responses to discovery requests and facilitates the collection of discovery documentation; organizes and maintains case files, pleadings, and other documents; coordinates document control systems with in-house attorneys and IT; communicates with project site teams and assists in document retention and collection; Coordinates the transfer of discovery documentation with outside attorney; observes case confidentiality; conducts legal research as directed by in-house attorneys.

 

Essential Job Functions

 

  1. Facilitates document production, including e-discovery searches, compilation of documents, and document review and organization. Learn and maintain a working knowledge of company databases and e-discovery tools. Work with in-house attorneys, and other internal stakeholders to collect all responsive discovery documentation including emails, correspondence, and other documentation. Oversee the progress of document gathering, request email/document searches from IT, and support requests from outside counsel and others.
  2. Interacts with project and site teams related to project matters, document organization, and potential claim issues. Monitor and assist in drafting legal notices relating to projects or legal claims.  Establish rapport with project and site teams to act as a liaison between the project and legal teams.
  3. Organizes and maintains case files, pleadings, and other documents and provide periodic case status memoranda to in-house attorneys.
  4. Works with in-house attorneys to review and approve invoices from law firms.  Submits approved invoices for payment and follow up with accounting to ensure payments are made.
  5. Conducts case law, statutory, and other legal research as directed by in-house attorneys.

 

Additional Job Functions

  1. Attends trainings and seminars to keep up to date on changes in contracting issues, insurance concerns, e-discovery tools, and court filing systems. 
  2. Identifies opportunities for streamlining work and reducing waste in order to improve efficiency.
  3. Performs other duties at the discretion of the supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Conversant and comfortable with legal principles and practices surrounding litigation.
  • Knowledge of construction related contracts preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills, and outstanding interpersonal skills and client service skills.
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of electronic discovery support applications and PACER system preferred.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and execute numerous tasks under tight time constraints.
  • Must be a team player and possess the ability to work effectively and efficiently in high pressure, time sensitive situations.
  • Advanced technical knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work with files in Portable Document Format, using Adobe; and ability to use databases and document management systems, and the willingness to learn various database formats and programs.
  • Ability to travel to project sites for the purpose of document collection and organization as needed.
