Director of Maintenance

Reports to: Vice President, Supply Chain

Benefit Classification: Salary, Exempt

Education Requirements: A four-year degree in related field, or combinations of related education and experience required.

Experience: Ten or more years of experience in construction equipment maintenance and repair, and five or more years of experience in leading teams in a construction environment driving process improvements and leveraging technology to deliver results.

Position Summary: Responsible for developing and executing a preventative maintenance and repair strategy that delivers best in-class utilization of equipment and service to the site teams. Leads a team of regional superintendents who supports on-site mechanics, drives process improvements, ensures training of teams, and implements technology enhancements to optimize equipment utilization and effectiveness. Partners with construction counterparts to ensure sufficient staffing of mechanics and proactive preventative maintenance plans are in place. Drives a focus on safety, optimized up-time, planned preventive maintenance, proactive tracking of equipment performance, and use and proper staffing and skills.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Assesses, enhances, deploys and continuously improves best-in-class maintenance, processes and tools.
  2. Leads a team that is located across multiple Blattner sites, with direct and indirect reports, guides and deploys maintenance strategies and execution plans.
  3. Ensures that an enterprise and project specific maintenance plan is developed and is performed timely to ensure safe operations of all equipment (owned, rented or leased).
  4. Defines, creates and implements the shift to an integrated technology driven environment for tracking and assessing equipment use and condition, identifying location, gathering operational analytics, connecting work instruction and standard processes to maintenance performed and capturing associate costs.
  5. Develops and implements a comprehensive preventative and predictive equipment repair programs including formal control programs to track and regulate repair costs and spare parts inventories for site.
  6. Collaborates closely with the Supply Chain Equipment team and the General Superintendents on standardization of equipment, investment and disposition of existing equipment, and piloting of new types of equipment.  
  7. Collaborates with the key stakeholders (e.g. Operations and Project Leadership) to ensure a fluid, transparent and constructive dialogue drives continual improvement and service to the organization.
  8. Assists Regional Maintenance Superintendents with planning proper staffing in the regions.
  9. Develops strategies to proactively develop talent for upcoming projects.
  10. Establishes processes and plans to ensure the regional maintenance and project maintenance team members are trained and leveraging best-practices.
  11. Monitors the equipment repair costs vs plan. Develops and leverages analytics to provide insight and drive improvement.
  12. Partners with equipment suppliers to drive leading edge approaches in equipment maintenance. Leverage equipment suppliers’ capabilities to enhance the maintenance tools and processes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the construction industry and the equipment used.
  • Extensive experience with trouble-shooting and correcting construction equipment maintenance - breakdowns and failures.
  • Proven experience in developing and deploying best in class processes and introducing technology solutions in a maintenance environment.
  • Experience in team building, coaching and succession planning for technical and engineering personal.
  • Highly motivated with a demonstrated passion for excellence and taking initiative.
  • Ability to travel approximately 50% of the time.
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
